ICYMI: Jay Jones Calls Out Jason Miyares, Republican Attacks Against Reproductive Rights on World Contraception Day

Jones: “Abortion and contraception are on the ballot this year… We need an Attorney General who’s going to protect our values, our resources, and our access to our health care, and someone who’s going to enforce the law when [Virginia] passes the Right to Contraception Act this coming January.”

Norfolk, VA – On Friday, Jay Jones joined Del. Marcia Price (HD-89), Planned Parenthood Advocates of Virginia, and storytellers to discuss how he’ll defend Virginians’ reproductive rights as Attorney General. View a recording of the event HERE

Virginia stands as the last southern state without a restrictive abortion ban because Democrats have held the line against relentless Republican attacks – including those from Jason Miyares. As a legislator, Miyares voted against legislation that defined birth control as “contraceptive methods that are approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration” and that explicitly stated “that birth control shall not be considered abortion.”

“Jason Miyares continues to stand by Donald Trump’s side as the Big Bill guts health care coverage for 350,000 Virginians, including their contraception coverage,” said Jones. “We continue to hear [from voters] about who’s going to fight for us – and Jason Miyares can’t do that, not only because he disagrees with the underlying policy about whether contraception should be accessible, but because he’s too weak and too scared to stand up to President Trump.”

“By the time the next World Contraception Day rolls around, the Virginia Right to Contraception Act will have passed the General Assembly and have been signed into law, and we will have Attorney General Jay Jones, who will defend it,” said Delegate Price (HD-89). “That’s because Virginia Democrats are 100% united on this. We believe everyone, regardless of where in Virginia you live, should have the right to use contraception.”

“Contraception and reproductive freedom are not fringe issues,” said Jamie Lockhart, Executive Director of Planned Parenthood Advocates of Virginia. “Poll after poll shows Virginians want these rights protected, but Jason Miyares and Republican leaders are out of step. They’re not talking about contraception or abortion on the campaign trail because they know the truth: Virginians don’t want politicians interfering in these deeply personal issues… We must recommit ourselves to passing the Virginia Right to Contraception Act, to advancing the reproductive freedom amendment, and holding politicians like Jason Miyares accountable when they put ideology ahead of our health.”

World Contraception Day, observed annually on September 26, is a global day of action focused on raising awareness of and protecting the right to contraception.
