Norfolk, VA – Today, Jay Jones released the following statement on the eighth anniversary of the violent white nationalist rally in Charlottesville:
“Eight years ago, our Commonwealth and our country witnessed horrific acts of racism, antisemitism, and violence that took the life of Heather Heyer and left scars that remain with all of us to this day.
“We must never forget the hatred we saw in Charlottesville, nor the moral failure of those who tried to excuse it. As the grandson of a civil rights pioneer, I was taught that progress is never guaranteed – it must be defended every single day.
“As Virginians, we have a responsibility to confront racism in all forms, to protect our communities from extremism and discrimination, and to ensure that all Virginians feel safe and welcome in their communities. The fight against bigotry is far from over, but together, we will build a Virginia focused on fairness, justice, and protection for all.”
