Richmond, VA – Jason Miyares is supposed to be working to keep Virginians safe – but he has consistently opposed life-saving gun violence prevention measures and put guns back in the hands of violent criminals. Here are the facts:
- Miyares said he was “proud to receive an A rating from the NRA” for his “lifetime voting record” against gun violence prevention, and he accepted $15,000 in campaign donations from the organization.
- Miyares voted against universal background checks to close loopholes that let criminals gain access to firearms, making it easier for them to get their hands on dangerous weapons.
- Miyares voted to allow more guns in preschools and daycare centers, and against requiring firearms to be safely stored in childcare facilities.
- Miyares voted against banning domestic abusers from owning firearms.
- After devastating mass shootings, Miyares voted against banning assault weapons and against banning trigger activator devices, allowing semiautomatic firearms to kill a greater number of people in a short period of time – devices so dangerous that the Trump administration banned them nationwide.
- Miyares refused to let localities adopt their own rules to keep guns out of places they don’t belong, voting against legislation allowing local governments to restrict the open carry of firearms and stated that he opposes any gun-free zones.
