Democratic Candidate for Attorney General Jay Jones Releases Public Safety Plan at Roundtable with Virginia Public Safety Leaders

Jones in public safety plan: “Virginia deserves an Attorney General who puts people over politics, stands up for law enforcement, and delivers real results.”

Richmond, VA – Today, Democratic candidate for Virginia Attorney General Jay Jones released his comprehensive public safety plan – outlining how he’ll keep Virginia families safe as the Commonwealth’s top attorney – at a roundtable discussion with local leaders, law enforcement officials, community and faith leaders, and gun safety advocates in Richmond, VA.

“As the father of two young boys, my goal is to ensure that every Virginian feels safe in their community,” said Jay Jones. “That takes all of us working together to improve what is lacking in our current AG’s office: attention to resources that help law enforcement close cases, programs to provide mental health treatment, a focus on gun violence prevention, and protecting our kids.”

In office, Jones will focus on three main pillars: combating violent crime and supporting crime victims, getting illegal guns off Virginia streets, and protecting Virginia’s children.

To stop violent crime in the Commonwealth and support victims, Jay will restore a department-wide focus on targeting violent crime, drug trafficking, sexual abuse, and serious offenses; work with law enforcement to ensure they have the high-quality staff, training, and technology they need to keep us safe; and invest in community-based services so individuals in crisis can get the help they need and law enforcement can focus on safety.

To get illegal guns off Virginia streets, Jay will fight for commonsense gun violence prevention laws, expand violence interruption programs, crack down on illegal guns, and prosecute bad actors who allow illegal guns to flow into our communities.

To protect Virginia’s children, Jay will establish a Child Safety Unit to protect our children from traffickers, sexual predators and abusers, and go after social media companies and other digital entities preying on our children for profits.

Jones also released his first ad of the general election cycle, “Stand Strong,” highlighting his record of increasing public safety funding by more than 20%, strengthening penalties for sex offenders, keeping kids safe in schools, and establishing programs to stop gangs like MS-13.
